MDash

Welcome to MDash

MDash is a free and polished Markdown workspace for focused technical writing in your browser. It combines a structured vault, live preview, math, diagrams, syntax highlighting, wiki-links, presentations, and first-class RTL support.

Your vault is stored in this browser. MDash has no account or note-sync server.

[!IMPORTANT] Browser storage can be cleared or lost. Create regular backups of work you cannot replace and keep them outside the browser.

Built with ❤️ by Mohammad Anini.

Start Here

  1. Choose New File in the Vault panel.
  2. Give the document a clear name.
  3. Write in the editor.
  4. Choose Editor, Split, Stacked, or Preview.
  5. Check the footer for Saved locally.

MDash saves automatically after you pause typing. Save failed opens a persistent warning with a retry action, so you do not need a separate Save command.

Read Getting Started for a short guided tour.

Install MDash from a supported browser when you want a dedicated window or home-screen entry. The core application works offline after it has been cached. Download the Offline Feature Pack from Settings while connected if you need every bundled math, diagram, and syntax-highlighting asset offline.

Your Vault

The Vault panel contains files and folders stored in this browser. Opening a file adds a tab; closing its tab does not delete it.

Use All, Favorites, Recent, and Trash to move between useful views. Right-click an editable item to rename, duplicate, move, export, inspect Properties, or move it to Trash. Trash remains recoverable until you choose permanent deletion.

Open Vault Organizer for filtering, multi-selection, bulk actions, ZIP export, Trash recovery, and larger reorganizations. Link updates are enabled by default, so moving or renaming a file can repair matching wiki-links and relative file links.

The bundled /MDash README and Docs folder are read-only. Duplicate a guide into a personal folder when you want an editable copy.

Read Vault Workflow for tabs, sorting, conflicts, Properties, Undo, Search, Favorites, Recent files, and Trash.

Write and Preview

MDash supports GitHub Flavored Markdown, tables, task lists, footnotes, alerts, superscript, subscript, and safe inline HTML.

Use Insert Table for a spreadsheet-style grid, Insert Emoji or Insert Symbol for searchable Unicode characters, and Date and Time for a visible <time>...</time> element.

Use Text Alignment to place the current paragraph or selected blocks on the Left, in the Center, or on the Right. Inside aligned content, the same menu offers Remove Alignment below a separator. MDash keeps the source wrapper compact while rendering its Markdown normally. The Markdown Guide covers insertion safeguards and spacing for external Markdown viewers.

Read the Markdown Guide for source and result examples, accessibility notes, and troubleshooting.

Add Code, Math, and Diagrams

Use a language tag for highlighted code:

interface Note {
  title: string;
  updatedAt: number;
}

Math can appear inline as $E = mc^2$ or in a display block:

$
\int_0^1 x^2\,dx = \frac{1}{3}
$

Rendered Result

$ \int_0^1 x^2,dx = \frac{1}{3} $

Mermaid diagrams use a fenced block:

flowchart LR
  Write --> Preview
  Preview --> Export

Choose Insert Code Block, Insert Equation, or Insert Diagram when you want templates and a live preview. Place the cursor inside an existing block to edit it with the same tool. Rendered Mermaid diagrams also provide View Source.

Connect and Present Ideas

Use [[Note Name]] to link another Markdown file, or [[Note Name|Visible Label]] to show an alias. Backlinks lists documents that refer to the current file. Short names search the vault; use a path to distinguish files with the same name. Relative file links resolve from the containing folder.

Put --- on its own line to start a new presentation slide. Press F5 or choose Present to open the deck. Presentation Mode provides themes, keyboard navigation, fullscreen, zoom, blank screen, and 16:9 PDF output.

Read Wiki-Links and Presentation Mode for the complete workflows.

Write in LTR and RTL

Rendered blocks detect text direction automatically, which allows English, Arabic, Hebrew, and Persian to coexist naturally.

For a document written mainly in one direction, choose Document Metadata or add a frontmatter field:

dir: rtl

العربية واللغات التي تكتب من اليمين إلى اليسار تظهر باتجاه طبيعي. English text can remain in the same document.

Read Themes and Direction for application themes, accents, bilingual typography, and document direction.

Import, Export, and Backup

Import a supported text or code file, a folder, a dropped file, or a compatible URL. Imported content becomes an independent vault copy.

OptionResult
Source fileDownloads the stored Markdown, text, or code
HTMLCreates a self-contained styled document
PDFOpens the browser print flow
Share by URLCreates a read-only link containing compressed source
ZIPCreates a readable copy of a folder or the live vault tree
Full backupPreserves the complete vault, including Trash, with optional settings

A share URL contains the document. Anyone with the complete link can read it, and other systems may retain or forward it.

Use a full backup for the most complete MDash restore point. Use a ZIP when you want a folder copy that remains readable outside MDash. Store important backups somewhere independent of the browser.

Read Import, Export, and Backup before moving important work, and read Privacy and Local Storage before clearing site data or sharing sensitive material.
